10 Social Media Dos & Don’ts

Considering a huge part of what we do is to take care of social media marketing for our clients, we at Wired think of ourselves as being pretty smart when it comes to mastering the art of having online conversations, so we have pulled together our top 10 dos and don’ts for managing social media accounts for business to help get you started.

  1. Do have a clear idea of what you want to achieve before you start delving into the complex world of social media: create goals, stake out a plan and stick to it.
  2. Don’t just spurt out information or images. Interact with your readers and avoid using automated services. Social media was made for having conversations and you want to avoid making people feel as though they are talking to a digital brick wall…
  3. Do stay active. People will quickly lose interest if they don’t hear from you for a while… much like that date you went on last Friday.
  4. Don’t delete or ignore the negative comments. If someone says something undesirable about your product, the worst thing you can do is ignore them. Address their issue and try to find a suitable solution as an unattended complaint tends to grow into a much bigger problem.
  5. Don’t leave inactive profiles live. Delete all remnants of old or unused spaces. It looks lazy and people will not know which profile is best to reach you on.
  6. Do your research and get to know your audience – they, after all, are the ones who drive the success of your social media campaigns. Work out what they do and don’t like and post and share accordingly.
  7. Do keep track of time. With social media, timing is everything. Be reactive to news and events and monitor the success of posts on a regular basis to ensure that you are posting at all the right times.
  8. Do work out which platforms are best for your business – not all of them will suit the needs of your target audience and you don’t want to waste time managing accounts no one is paying any attention to.
  9. Don’t leave your account profiles unfinished. There is nothing worse than clicking on a company profile to find no photograph and little to no information about the business. Where possible, include a link to your site and a contact email.
  10. Don’t make poor grammar and spelling mistakes. This one goes for all copy on your website and social media accounts. There is nothing worse than a misplaced, apostrophe or cApital lEtter is there?

So there we have it. Our top 10 social media dos and don’ts for business.
